Malaysians rank 6th in number of obese adults in Asia


Malaysia has the sixth highest number of obese adults in Asia, based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) Report 2010, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai revealed today.
Speaking at a press conference after chairing the 9th Meeting of the National Council on Food Safety and Nutrition at his office, Liow said the obesity among schoolchildren has also been on the rise, from 20.7% in 2001 to 26.5% in 2007.
Pointing out that it was a worldwide trend, he said based on the WHO report, there were an estimated 400 million obese adults worldwide in 2005, with the number expected to rise to 700 million in 2015.
"According to the WHO Report 2010, we are ranked sixth among Asian countries. And based on our own National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2006, we found 60% or 7.4 million Malaysian above 18 years of age had body mass index (BMI) of 23 and above," said Liow.
(The BMI is measurement of the relative percentages of fat and muscle mass based on a person 's weight and height. A range of between 23 and 24.9 indicates overweight for Southeast Asian body types while a reading above 25 means obese.)
Liow said obesity can also adversely affect the nation’s productivity level and that serious actions have to be taken to address it.
"Under the National Plans of Action for Nutrition Malaysia, we will work with all relevant agencies to come up with strategies and activities that will educate Malaysians to consume healthy foods and maintain a healthy diet," he said.

Louis Ignarro, Ph.D., is a member of Herbalife’s Nutrition and Scientific Advisory Board (NAB, SAB)The NAB is made up of leading experts around the world in the fields of nutrition and health who educate and train Herbalife independent distributors on the principles of nutrition, physical activity and healthy lifestyle. The SAB advises the company on advancements in the field of nutrition science.
Ignarro has made exceptional contributions to science. His efforts were recognized with the Nobel* Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998 for his discovery of nitric oxide and its range of benefit to the human body. His work has since led to additional research by scientists around the globe on nitric oxide. After working with Herbalife to develop Niteworks, a dietary supplement designed to boost the body’s own production of nitric oxide, Ignarro become a member of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board.
Ignarro is currently a distinguished professor of pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine’s Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology in Los Angeles, which he joined in 1985. Before relocating to California, he was a professor of pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, for 12 years. Previously, Ignarro was a staff scientist, research department, for the pharmaceutical division of CIBA-GEIGY Corporation in New York.
Ignarro has published numerous articles on his research. In addition to the Nobel* Prize, he also received the Basic Research Prize of the American Heart Association in 1998, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the advancement of cardiovascular science. The same year, he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences and the following year, into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He is the founder of the Nitric Oxide Society, and founder and editor-in-chief of “Nitric Oxide Biology and Chemistry.” Ignarro holds a B.S. in pharmacology, Columbia University, 1962, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology, University of Minnesota, 1966. He also received a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical pharmacology from National Institutes of Health in 1968.

Michael O. Johnson, Chairman and Chief Executive



Michael O. Johnson has a track record of success as a leader. Named chief executive officer of Herbalife in 2003 and chairman in 2007, he sets the vision and strategy, and is the voice of the company to approximately 2.1 million Independent Distributors in 75 countries. He oversees all aspects of the company’s global operations, ensures the company has the resources necessary to meet its goals and pursues profitability and growth to increase shareholder value.  

Under his direction, the company had five years of double-digit sales growth and has doubled – from net sales of $1.1 billion in 2003 to $2.7 billion in 2010 – as well as building a global brand through its sponsorship of more than 100 teams, athletes and fitness events around the world, including the LA Galaxy, FC Barcelona, the LA Triathlon, Amgen Tour of California and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). 

Michael has strengthened Herbalife’s product development and manufacturing through the creation of Nutrition Advisory Board, the continued funding of the Mark Hughes Cellular and Molecular Nutrition Laboratory at UCLA, research and clinical studies at other leading universities, the development of the Herbalife Product and Science Center in Los Angeles and the Herbalife Innovation & Manufacturing facility in Lake Forest, California, and the creation of the Herbalife Nutrition Institute.

Michael is also chairman of the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF), which is funded through donations from Herbalife, its Independent Distributors, employees, families and friends. In 2005, HFF launched its worldwide Casa Herbalife program to help bring good nutrition to needy children. Its first US-based site was at A Place Called Home and there are now more than 60 Casa Herbalife programs on six continents. 

Outside the boardroom, Michael is a fitness enthusiast and has been participating in triathlons and cycling races for more than 20 years.  He has encouraged Herbalife employees and Independent Distributors to join with him in participating in triathlons, marathons, cycling and fitness events around the world. Prior to Herbalife, Michael spent 17 years with The Walt Disney Company, serving as president of Disney International prior to joining Herbalife.

About Herbalife's Founder Mark Hughes


Herbalife started as one young man's dream more than 29 years ago. Mark Hughes was just 18 years old when his mother Joan passed away from an accidental drug overdose of prescription weight loss pills.
Being a part time model and actress in L.A, Joan Marks' Mom, struggled with her weight for many years and finding a convenient and effective weight loss method as a single working mom in the late 1970's held little alternatives other than diet pills. Diet drugs are highly addictive, have terrible side effects and make it difficult to sleep so Joan also took sleeping pills and unfortunately she had an overdose and died.
This event and the situation of Mark Hughes life impacted him so profoundly that Mark decided that he would make a difference in the world by finding a safe and effective alternative to the diet drugs and pills that had killed his mom.
Mark had an interest in nutrition and particularly in Chinese Herbs. He studied these herbs and travelled to all parts of China speaking with the Chinese Herbal Doctors and discovered firsthand the incredible health benefits these herbs held on the human body. The Chinese Mark discovered had been using these herbs for thousands of years as their medicine.
Despite having no medical background, never finishing high school, no business background and no money Mark managed to find some who would listen to his idea and with their help and support and 1 year of testing and refining together they formulated "Formula 1." A meal replacement made with soy protein, vitamins and herbs. Mark wanted to help people lose weight by replacing 2 meals a day with this formula and thereby reduce calories while still getting 100% of all the nutrition the cells needed for optimum health. And "Cellular Nutrition" was born.
In February 1980 at 23 years of age Mark got his first customer on the product, his granny Mimi, who lost 20 pounds and introduced 20 of her friends.

1st The Compensation Plan pays a maximum of 50% on all sales. From high school students to moms, to taxi driver and even your family doctor making sales means helping someone improve health, and thereby adding a couple hundred or thousands of extra dollars to your monthly income.
2nd Reward distributors who grew an organization to help with the 'Dream'. From 1 distributor to 100,000 you would be paid fairly on all of your team including wholesale commissions of up to 25%, royalties 15% and infinite bonuses up to 7%, vacations and World Wide Sales Bonuses amounting to 1% of annual turnover.
